What the job includes

Shop, barn, home and outbuilding pads cut, filled in compacted lifts and finished flat to grade. Everything built on a pad inherits the pad's mistakes. A slab poured on uncompacted fill cracks, and no amount of rebar fixes soft ground underneath.

Strip, then fill in lifts

Topsoil comes off the footprint first. Fill goes back in lifts and gets compacted as it goes — not dumped in one deep layer and driven over a couple times. Deep uncompacted fill settles for years.

Set the pad above grade

A pad at or below surrounding grade collects water. We build it up so the finished elevation sheds, and we grade the surrounding ground to carry water away rather than to the building.

Finishing to grade with a laser

The pad gets checked with a laser level across its whole area, not eyeballed from one corner. Flat and at the right elevation is the entire deliverable.

Working with your builder

Concrete crews want the pad ready, at grade, with room to work and a way to get a truck in. We coordinate on elevation and access before we start so nothing has to be redone.

Oversizing the working area

Cutting a pad exactly to the building footprint leaves nowhere to stand. We carry the pad out past the footprint so forms can be set and a truck can get around the building.

Rock and hard digging

What to know before a pad goes in

Footprint and finished elevation. The building plan sets the pad size, and the finished floor height sets how much cut or fill. Bring the plan or the building package.

Fill or cut. A pad on a slope is cut on the high side and filled on the low. Fill goes in compacted lifts, not dumped and driven over.

Post frame or slab. A post-frame shop and a slab-on-grade home want different tolerances and different edges. We build to what the builder needs.

Drainage away from the pad. A pad that sits in a low spot collects every storm. The grade around it matters as much as the pad itself.

Utilities coming to it. Power, water and sewer stubs are easier to run before the pad is finished than after the slab is poured.

How long does it take to build a pad?

A typical shop or outbuilding pad is one to two days. Larger pads, deep fill or hard digging take longer, and we'll tell you which one you're looking at after walking the site.

Do you compact the fill?

Yes — fill goes in in lifts and gets compacted as it's placed. Skipping that is why slabs on new fill crack a year or two later.

Can you haul off the extra dirt?

Yes, or we can stockpile it on site if you have somewhere to use it. Keeping the spoils on site usually saves money if you have a low spot that needs filling.

What if you hit rock?
